A strong storm, known as Hurricane Daniel, hit north-eastern Libya causing two thousand dead and five thousand missing mainly in the city of Derna, after hitting Greece and Turkey. Despite the alert from the authorities the effects were catastrophic. Torrential rains destroyed three dams and swept away two others. A river of water and mud invaded the city of Derna. The city of Shahhat, with its archaeological site Cyrene, was also damaged. Throughout the country, ports and airports have been preventively closed and oil production has been blocked. The entire city is under one meter of water.
The government declared three days of national mourning.
In Trento and in the REBUILD management unit we are concerned and close to the Libyan people for this frightening climate disaster.
